چکیده

Once weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are unambiguously detected in direct-detection experiments, the challenge will be to determine what one may infer from the data. Here, I examine the prospects for reconstructing the local speed distribution of WIMPs in addition to WIMP particle-physics properties (mass, cross sections) from next-generation cryogenic and liquid-noble direct-detection experiments. I find that the common method of fixing the form of the velocity distribution when estimating constraints on WIMP mass and cross sections means losing out on the information on the speed distribution contained in the data and may lead to biases in the inferred values of the particle-physics parameters. I show that using a more general, empirical form of the speed distribution can lead to good constraints on the speed distribution. Moreover, one can use Bayesian model-selection criteria to determine if a theoretically-inspired functional form for the speed distribution (such as a MaxwellBoltzmann distribution) fits better than an empirical model. The shape of the degeneracy between WIMP mass and cross sections and their offset from the true values of those parameters depends on the hypothesis for the speed distribution, which has significant implications for consistency checks between direct-detection and collider data. In addition, I find that the uncertainties on theoretical parameters depends sensitively on the upper end of the energy range used for WIMP searches. Better constraints on the WIMP particle-physics parameters and speed distribution are obtained if the WIMP search is extended to higher energy ( 1 MeV).

DARWIN: dark matter WIMP search with noble liquids

DARWIN (dark matter wimp search with noble liquids) is a design study for a nextgeneration, multi-ton dark matter detector in Europe. Liquid argon and/or liquid xenon are the target media for the direct detection of dark matter candidates in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). Light and charge signals created by particle interactions in the active detector volume are obser...

Completing our Universe: Direct Detection of Dark Matter with Cryogenic Liquid Noble Gases

Leading postulations in supersymmetry indicate that the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) accounts for the bulk of mass observed as dark matter in the Universe. Cryogenic liquid noble detectors are expected to discover these particles within the next two years. This experiment investigates the limits of detectors designed around the XENON10 prototype in determination of WIMP mass and i...

Dark matter detection with cryogenic detectors

Direct detection of dark matter in the form of Weakly-Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPS) is an active field of research. Cryogenic detectors have been in the forefront of the field, due to their exquisite ability to reject backgrounds from interactions of normal matter. In this paper, I describe the current status and future prospects for such experiments. 1. The landscape of dark matter dir...

ArDM: a ton-scale liquid Argon experiment for direct detection of Dark Matter in the Universe

The ArDM project aims at developing and operating large noble liquid detectors to search for direct evidence of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) as Dark Matter in the Universe. The initial goal is to design, assemble and operate a ≈1 ton liquid Argon prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of a ton-scale experiment with the required performance to efficiently detect and sufficiently ...

Two-Phase Xenon Time Projection Chambers for WIMP Searches and Other Applications

Astronomical evidence indicates that 23 % of the energy density in the universe is comprised of some form of non-standard, non-baryonic matter that has yet to be observed. One of the predominant theories is that dark matter consists of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles), so named because they do not interact electromagnetically or through the strong nuclear force. In direct dark matte...
